Simplicity in your photo is the key. The fewer objects in the photo, the more the attention of the viewer will be drawn to the main subject. It is important to be able to have a focal point for an image. If you are taking pictures in a crowd, for instance, make sure that you are able to draw your viewers attention to a particular point: a building or a brightly colored object that stands out from the crowd.
